As is customary at this time of year, automakers are releasing their sales reports for the previous year. The results for 2022 and 2023 brought many surprises, but the one that stood out most was the Toyota Corolla surpassing the Civic in sales for the first time. Fortunately, Canada’s favorite car has managed to reclaim its title for 2024.
The Honda Civic was officially the best-selling car in Canada last year, with a 14% increase in sales. This represents a total of 31,774 units. Things didn’t go as well for Toyota, with 25,988 Corollas sold. Despite an 8% drop, these numbers remain impressive.
The Hyundai Elantra was the only other car to exceed 20,000 units, with 20,427 sold in 2024.
A Resurgence in Popularity
In my opinion, several factors explain the Civic’s strong comeback in 2024. To understand the situation, we need to look back to 2022. At that time, Honda was struggling to meet demand and was in the midst of a transition. The 11th generation had just arrived on the market, and its lineup was not as extensive or diverse as that of the Corolla.
Honda addressed this issue by adding numerous versions to the Civic lineup over the past two years. This diversity allowed the Honda Civic to reclaim its position at the top of car sales. Not to mention the introduction of a hybrid powertrain for the 2025 model year, which is expected to help the Honda Civic capture even more market share.
It’s also worth noting that the Honda Civic was the only car to rank among the top 10 best-selling models in Canada last year.
